Over the centuries, Inverness was often the focal point of clashes between Highland and Island Chiefs who ruled their lands like kings, and the Scottish Crown, which tried to subdue them. Many of the traditional Scottish events take place here each summer, including the Highland Games and the Sheep Dog Trials.
